Cancer is a lifestyle disease. Sustained stimuli can trigger select genes to make cells in an organ proliferate uncontrollably. Smoking for instance is known to cause lung cancer.
Sun and radiation are also understood to cause cancers of the skin. The American cancer organization American Cancer Society | Information and Resources about for Cancer: Breast, Colon, Lung, Prostate, Skin has listed the following diet-related causes of cancer:
- Get to and stay at a healthy weight throughout life.
- Be physically active on a regular basis.
- Follow a healthy eating pattern at all ages.
- Avoid or limit alcohol.
The World Cancer Research Fund estimates that at least 18% of all cancers diagnosed in the US are related to body fatness, physical inactivity, alcohol consumption, and/or poor nutrition, and thus could be prevented.
Ayurveda does recommend the consumption of freshly prepared food but they do not relate this as a cause of cancer. Ayurveda texts were written at a time when food preservation technologies had not yet been developed by man. Stale food could get infected, especially in the warm tropical climate of India. This can explain the recommendation in favor of freshly prepared food.
