Natural solutions for diabetes complement modern treatment and management. Before I explain these, it is best to outline the three main types of diabetes.
Children are mainly affected by Type 1 diabetes. The ability of the body to produce insulin is impaired. It is due to damage or destruction of the insulin-producing organ pancreas. Such patients require insulin regularly to prevent hyperglycemia (high blood sugar). Type 1 diabetes is often inherited.
Then we have gestational diabetes, which is seen during pregnancy. Gestational diabetes affects the mother and the child.
Type 2 diabetes mellitus is the third type and accounts for approximately 90 percent of all diabetes.
Diabetes manifests itself when insulin produced in the body is unable to adequately metabolize the sugar in the blood, causing blood sugar levels to spike. Diabetes is a lifestyle disease and is conventionally treated by:
1. Diet modification
Coming to natural solutions for diabetes, according to Ayurveda, it is inherited or acquired by bad lifestyle habits that people learn later in life. They believed that an imbalance in the three doshas, which in Greek medicine would be comparable to ‘humors,’ causes a disease to express itself in the body. A disbalance can bring about metabolic changes in fat and muscle. Imbalances lead to diabetes. Blockages in the urinary system, according to Ayurveda, cause diabetes. Weak urine evacuation makes the patient feel the urge for frequent urination.
Treatment protocols in Ayurveda vary according to patients’ constitution and physical condition. Radical detoxification is the recommendation for individuals who are obese but healthy patients. For the frail and lean milder detoxification procedures are suggested. Other recommendations in Ayurveda include cleansing and detoxification, herbal medicines, and a strict diet. We will visit each of these recommendations in subsequent chapters.
Detoxification, also called purification, involves massaging the body with medicated oils. Excess fat and other impurities in the body that are the cause of diabetes should be removed, according to Ayurveda. They, therefore, recommend purgation. Fasting, physical exercise, and consuming specified herb combinations are other prescriptions.
Several herbs and herbal combinations are used in Ayurveda to treat diabetes. After a detailed scientific review, I have been able to identify four plants – Gymnema sylvestre, Trigonella foenum-graecum, Eugenia jambolana, and Curcuma longa that has the most substantial scientific support for their anti-diabetic properties.
Natural solutions in traditional Chinese medicine are similar to those outlined in Ayurveda. Hereto, the focus is on lifestyle modification. Diabetes in Chinese medicine is an outcome of –
1. A diet rich in sweets, fatty foods, alcohol, and hot drinks like coffee or tea is the first cause.
2. Emotional cause – stress, anxiety, depression.
3. A constitutional deficiency that causes fatigue, weakness, lethargy, and pale complexion is another cause.
T.C.M. therapies take into account the individual’s constitution and causal factors. The treatments seek to address the root cause that is causing the deficiency and disharmony within the body. The disbalance is causing the disease to manifest itself.
A review of herbs used in TCM shows that Atractylodes macrocephala, Codonopsis pilosula, Dioscorea opposita, Flos lonicerae, and Pueraria lobata retard the progression of diabetes by reducing blood glucose levels.
In my research on natural solutions for diabetes, I understand that diabetes mellitus type 2 diabetes can be effectively managed with a disciplined lifestyle, diet, exercise, and modern medication. The role of herbal medicines in diabetes management is supportive and often results additive.
If you stick to these fundamentals, observe a disciplined lifestyle, and observe the routine fixed by your diabetologist, you will lead a normal life. The role of natural solutions in type 2 diabetes management is supportive.
