Type2 diabetes is a lifestyle disease. The disease tends to progress over time. If not managed and checked, it has been found to reduce life expectancy more so in women than in men. Franco et al., 2007
The disease has been seen to be reversible too. Human clinical trials have shown that a low-fat vegan diet appeared to improve glycemia and plasma lipids more than did conventional diabetes diet recommendations. (Barnard et al.,2009)
Here is a summary of natural solutions options that have been found to make a difference in scientific studies:
A systematic review of articles and studies on the health impact of Yoga shows that its’ practice helps in weight control, reduction of blood pressure, blood lipids, and blood sugar. (Yang, K., 2007; Youngwanichsetha, S. et al., 2014)
Yoga mudra (sitting with one finger of the hand touching the thumb) and Shalabasana (locust pose) adversely affected people with diabetes and worsened their diabetes status. It is an interesting observation and indicates that the nature of exercise is also vital in diabetes management. Individually Dhanurasana (Bow pose) was found to most effective in diabetes control. Yoga was useful for people with diabetes of all ages. (Sahay, B.K., 2007)
A review of published scientific papers between 1979 and 2009 notes that acupuncture treatment reverses metabolic disorders such as enhanced blood sugar levels, inflammation, obesity, and other effects contributing to building insulin resistance. (Liang, F et al., 2010) Acupuncture and moxibustion, individually or together, were observed to be effective therapy for diabetes. (Liao, H., et al., 2007)
After a detailed scientific review, I have been able to identify four plants – Gymnema sylvestre, Trigonella foenum-graecum, Eugenia jambolana, and Curcuma longa that has the most substantial scientific support for their anti-diabetic properties.
A review of herbs used in TCM shows that Atractylodes macrocephala, Codonopsis pilosula, Dioscorea opposita, Flos lonicerae, and Pueraria lobata retard the progression of diabetes by reducing blood glucose level.
The above-listed options are based on theoretical study and analysis. It is best to consult your physician before applying these solutions.
